Regis stood for a long time in the little cabin, a ragged scrap of paper in his hand, looking out the open door into the afternoon’s heat. After a while, he looked down at the paper and held it up and read it once again.

When you find this note, I won’t be here. I’m 18 now and that means I’m a man and I can make my own decisions about my own life. I know you’re going to want to come after me and drag me back to your ranch, but don’t. Just do us both a favor and let me find my own way, even if the world is, as you said, a hard place. I expect I know that already. Don’t forget that before I tracked you down in Texas, I was on my own. I’ll come back some time. I don’t know when. But when I do, we’ll have some of those good, brotherly times together. Until then, thank you for everything. I do appreciate it.
